Cumbrian Centurion Challenge 100
Since 1981 The Climbers Shop has hosted the log book for the Long Distance Walkers Association Cumbrian Centurion Challenge also known as The Trident Way. This is a high level route for experienced walkers but the beauty is that as long as your take in the three (Trident) peaks of Helvellyn, Skiddaw and Scafell and cover 100 miles on the ground then whatever route or timeframe you take to complete it is entirely up to you. If scrambling is your thing there are plenty of opportunities to make it a technical adventure, if not then there are plenty of footpaths that allow for keen walkers to complete the challenge around some of the most beautiful scenery the Lakes has to offer.
Only 121 people have taken on the challenge since 1981 with the first and youngest Centurion being a mere 9 years old! Don’t be fooled into thinking that this challenge is a doddle though – oh no! There are plenty of those original challengers who came back to sign their entry as abandoned with comments on the abysmal weather, getting lost, getting benighted and generally having a miserable time of it. The majority though, are charged with adrenalin and sheer delight at having risen to the challenge and completed their 100 mile Lakeland Three Peaks.
Most of the Centurions so far have completed the challenge as a five day backpacking trip but if you fancy something a little more relaxed you could opt to B&B or even walk a section over a weekend to complete it across the whole year if you wish. The choice is yours – simply pop into our Ambleside shop to sign in the book and record your route with some photos using #climbersshop60CCC to share on social media if you wish. Once you have completed your 100 miles simply come back into our Ambleside shop to sign out of the book and receive your commemorative cloth sew on patch and Climbers Shop Anniversary Enamel Badge.
Full details are held on the LDWA website or you can pay a small fee to download a full route description, photos and route cards at Adventure Guides UK. Better still, you can do your own thing and plan your own route for free! Why not sign up to our Strava club to keep track on your progress and share routes?
So, what are you waiting for? Use the evenings to get planning, put in some training, grab your pack and join The Climbers Shop community on the Cumbrian Centurion Challenge!
