Petzl - Lunar Round
Grab your headtorch and experience the Lake District under the stars!
We can’t guarantee stars every time but the Petzl Lunar Round routes have been especially designed to offer three great circuits from The Climbers Shop front door. Choose from the Full, Half or Crescent for a great night out!
So what is the Lunar Round all about?
The Lunar Round is a series of summits that must be reached in order either clockwise or anti-clockwise, starting from The Climbers Shop in Ambleside, The Lake District.
The round must be completed between sunset and sunrise, with each season presenting it's own challenges.
The Full Moon is approximately 40km with 2,900m ascent and must include the Summits: Red Screes, Little Hart Crag, Dove Crag, Hart Crag, Fairfield, Seat Sandal,Steel Fell, Calf Crag, High Raise, Harrison Stickle, Blea Rigg, Silver Howe, Loughrigg.
The Half Moon is approximately 20km with 1,500m ascent and must include the following Summits: Below Lord Crag, Heron Pike, Great Rigg, Fairfield, Hart Crag, Dove Crag, Little Hart Crag, Red Screes.
The Crescent Moon is approximately 16km with 600m ascent and must include the following points: Below Lord Crag, Alcock Tarn, Grasmere Centre, Grasmere Lake Shore, Rydal Lake Shore.
How do I get started?
The Lunar Round can be walked or run at any time of the year in either a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction, the only caveat being that you must complete your round between sunset and sunrise. In midwinter this can give around 15 hours to complete your round but you could face some challenging Lake District conditions! In mid summer the time available drops to around 6 1/2 hours and although conditions may be far better you might still experience some challenging Lake District conditions!
As usual, please exercise good mountain sense and be prepared for rapidly changing weather, night navigation and the full set of challenges a round can throw at you in the dark of our mountains.
To submit your round email us at lunarround@petzl.co.uk with your name and a photo of you starting and finishing at The Climbers Shop if possible. We also need the stats from your Strava, Garmin, RunKeeper, MapMyRun etc. to show start/finish and total elapsed time from leaving the shop to returning.
